Side Dish: Carhenge - Alliance, NE 7/3/10

Along with the Cadillac Ranch Roadside Attraction, and others of the same ilk, Carhenge in rural Alliance, Nebraska has quickly risen to a Holy Grail attraction for lovers of the Roadside Life.
However.........this site reeks of FEMA trailers, men in wife beater T-shirts, and a dog named Jethro on a front porch howlin' at the squirrels, but most of all....missed opportunities. We realize as much as anything that the charm in Roadside stops are sometimes the rustic nature of them. However....this was just unkempt.

The weeds you see abound throughout the very small site and there were piles of trash littering the walkway, as well as the cars themselves.
Regardless....the warm July morning beckoned us from our Alliance Holiday Inn and we walked amongst the painted cars.
Perhaps I am being too harsh.....It is Carhenge after all, not the Eiffel Tower. But is cutting the grass and using a little weedkiller asking too much? The owners of the site no doubt have a minor gold mine on their hands, but one came away disappointed.

Carhenge is quickly becoming a Roadside America must-see among enthusiasts, but as it stands now, with its trailer gift shop and shoddy appearance, it looks a bit too much like a junkyard to warrant too much praise.
There are actual junkyard cars and trashbins directly behind the attraction giving off the appearance that someone snuck their heap of metal into the field one night hoping no one would notice its inclusion. Sadly - they may have been right.
